Felinity was my undergraduate capstone project at The University of New Mexico. Felinity follows Max, an uninspired painter who suddenly finds a beautiful painting in his apartment one morning without explanation. As he tries to find the origin of this artwork, he uncovers his spiritual purpose as an artist.
Felinity was my first return to traditional narrative after two years of experimental and essay films. First starting as a short story, Felinity really let me explore how to break from genre conventions while still adhering to the narrative form. Through a collaboration with cinematographer Bryant Staff Jr., and producer J.P. Kirby, we tried to emulate the artistic sensibilities of American sitcoms and Japanese "slice of life" anime.
In order to capture the character of Rutabaga, I worked with puppeteer, animator, and performer Daniela Basista to create a puppet that we used on-screen in the film. We took heavy of inspiration from puppets created by The Jim Henson Creature shop for film franchises like The Muppets and Sesame Street.
The film was shot on RED Cinema, and featured James Clare, Kelsey Beer, Mark J Richman, and Daniela Basista.
